The student councils of Mattlidens gymnasium and Kaitaan lukio - secondary education schools in Espoo, Finland are raising funds for Shiksha Niketan School. The fundraising is scheduled for November 15th in Kaitaan lukio and November 27th 2019 at Mattlidens gymnasium. The goal is to raise 10 000€ by the 10th of December. This money can be used to improve Shiksha Niketan School in different ways.
It is very difficult for a teacher to be highly effective without having basic amenities in the classroom space. Basic amenities include having enough blackboards, shelves for storing teaching materials and other classroom materials and dedicated places to display student work and classroom charts. When teachers are equipped with these basic amenities it makes it much easier for them to focus on teaching and learning and not have to worry about other non-teaching related structural issues.
The teachers at Shikshaniketan School, which is an extended primary school located in rural Rajasthan, are currently facing the challenge of having inadequate resources in their classrooms. Currently the classrooms have the bare minimum. Teachers have expressed their desire for adding basic amenities to their classrooms. Teachers expressing their ideas for “an ideal classroom” can be seen in the attached video.
In addition to adding necessities the teachers have expressed their desire for making the learning space more attractive. Some ideas that have been shared include painting the windows and doors and adding paintings along the upper and lower boarder of the classes. These small changes will have the potential impact of making students more excited about coming to class and increasing the pride that the teachers take in their duties and maintenance of their classrooms and the overall school space.
At the very least, teachers should be equipped with the basic infrastructure to support their teaching. Beyond that, children should be welcomed into a space that makes them feel happy, comfortable and safe, while naturally encouraging them to be creative, curious and want to learn new things. A small contribution would help to enable that for 1/20 classrooms in the school. Each contribution helps and will be greatly appreciated.
